90% Silver Coin bags?
Opinions? Anyone like these $1000 bags of quarters and dimes? Good idea or waste of space and better to have 1 oz rounds like ASE?

Re: 90% Silver Coin bags?
I think it depends whether you already have a solid stock of Silver Eagles or not. 90% is more liquid and easier to make small amounts of change in a SHTF scenario. It is a good idea to have both ASE and a stock of 90%.

Re: 90% Silver Coin bags?
90% is the mainstay of the "SHTF" believers, and is usually at one end of the extreme or the other as far as pricing. In times of slow PM markets, I have seen it selling for upward of 10% discounts to melt, and as high as 40-60% premiums over melt at times when it was in more demand than supplies could provide for (such as the Y2K period). It's always a good avenue of playing the premiums, buying when there is a glut and selling in times when everyone wants it. The premiums right now look "high", but not when compared to other times in the past when they were considerably higher. And 90% has several advantages, such as being available in one of the smallest fractions of an ounce (dimes), easily divisible for bartering, a standard unit of weight, as well as being probably the most recognizable of all forms of silver here in the U.S., not to mention extremely good liquidity anytime you are ready to sell. You can buy it in small lots at most coin shows, sometimes cheaper than full-bag quotes, and accumulate a little at a time rather than making a single large purchase or sale like you have to do with larger silver bars. Dealers seldom "discount" 90% junk for reasons of assaying or refining either, and it trades as bags of lose coins very readily. There are advantages and disadvantages to all forms of silver, whether bars, 90%, Eagles or other official one ouncers, shot, or what have you. The disadvantages of 90% are actually very few.

Re: 90% Silver Coin bags?
The biggest disadvantage for me -- with back problems -- is the weight: about 56 pounds.

Re: 90% Silver Coin bags?
I hold plenty of ten-ouncers, a few 100-ouncers, and the rest in 90%.
If I could find more 90% right now, I'd take it. |
Re: 90% Silver Coin bags?
IMHO, 90% is the way to go!

Re: 90% Silver Coin bags?
I love 90% for the reasons of ease of bartering if TSHTF. Even if silver falls horrendously in a major deflation scenario (I dont see this happening but just for example purposes), then this will never go to zero. It will still have a face value on it unless our currency is completely devalued. Either way, it's silver content is well known and trusted among bullion traders. Always nice to have 1 oz and 10 oz bars though as well.

Re: 90% Silver Coin bags?
Why? Easier to sell and barter?

Re: 90% Silver Coin bags?
Most of my silver is 90%, 1 ounce bars/rounds, and ten ounce bars. I have not bought a 1000 dollar bag but rather bought at fleamarkets and E-Bay.:shine:

Re: 90% Silver Coin bags?
Any advice on how, or who, to buy from on ebay? How do I determine if price is good?

Re: 90% Silver Coin bags?
I have been able to pick up some small lots $5-$10 face by posting an ad on craigslist that I pay 8X face.
